Dengue Fever @ UC Riverside

Dengue Fever’s hot and sweaty mix of Cambodian garage rock, Afro grooves, and neo-surf music is a mega-sensation for their uncommon pop/music sound. Featuring songs sung in English and Khmer (Cambodian), the band's unique take on '60s Cambodian pop and American surf rock has earned worldwide attention since their sophomore album, Escape From the Dragon House (2005) was named the top International release of the year by the editors of online retail giant Amazon. In 2006, Mojo (U.K.) named the same album to their Top 5 World Music releases of the year. This distinctive masala of mood-swinging sounds owes its distinctive kick to the reverbed guitar riffs, winding organ sounds and exotic allure of Cambodian pop star and band front singer, Chhom Nimol. Her primal sound and hypnotic dance grooves gels with the bands kinetic eclecticism in a way that’s dangerously infectious just like the tropical malady that gives the band its name.
